Scorpion Facts

Many people may assume that a scorpion is an insect, but they are, in fact, arachnids. They are closely related to spiders, ticks, and mites. They have a very distinctive appearance, with two body segments, a pair of pincers, and a long tail that ends in a bulb-shaped stinger. They are equipped with venom glands, making their stings poisonous. A scorpion may be provoked into stinging if it feels threatened and can be dangerous to humans.

In Texas, the most commonly found scorpion is the striped-back scorpion, which grows to be around two and a half inches long. They can live anywhere from three to eight years. A female scorpion will have live young, who will live on her back until their first molt. They are nocturnal creatures and are usually found outside instead of inside of buildings. They are comfortable hiding under the cover of leaves, wood chips, bark, or other such materials. In the dark, they can be located with the use of a black light or UV bulb because they glow.
